This former student is now enjoying the world of work!

I studied the Cache Diploma in Child Care and Education at Lambeth College, Levels 1, 2 and 3. Deaf First supported me with full time CSWs and weekly tutorials with a Teacher of the Deaf. This helped me to keep up with my course work. I did work placements in nurseries and schools with CSW support so I had lots of experience with children of different ages. One of the schools offered me a job. Now I am working full time with children in a Primary School in Streatham. I really enjoy my job.

Meet Deaf First Students Estelle, Khima, Maimun and Adam.

Estelle from Sutton

I am a student at South Thames College, Merton Campus, studying Childcare and Education Level 3. I have a cochlear implant which helps me to hear well, but I still need support to make sure I have not missed anything that is said in the classroom. Deaf First gives me that support by providing notetakers. I also attend tutorials once a week at the Deaf First centre at Oak Lodge School. My Deaf First Tutor gives me very good advice when I need it, and I receive great support with my coursework too.

Khima from Plumstead

I am now studying Book-keeping Level 2 and Computerised Accounts (Sage) Level 2 at Lambeth College. I have both a CSW and a Notetaker from Deaf First.  They have good experience. The CSW signs for me as the tutor and students are talking. The students ask interesting questions. The Notetaker writes very clear notes for me which I find very useful. I also go for one to one tutorials at Deaf First. The tutor helps me with my English and makes sure I understand the notes. The Deaf First staff help me with everything linked to my studies. I would like to thank Deaf First.

Maimun from Battersea

I go to Lambeth College in Brixton. I like to learn English because I need to improve. I passed my English Entry 1 exam. I feel happy. I can’t hear the teacher so I have a communicator with me. I come to a tutorial at Deaf First every Wednesday. If I don’t understand my coursework, I ask my Deaf First Tutor to explain. I always do my homework every evening. I read and write English at home. Sometimes I translate from Arabic to English. I borrow books from the college library.

Adam from Streatham

I am a student at Lambeth College, Clapham Centre. I have nearly finished the Childcare Level 1 course. I have enjoyed the course and work placements in Nurseries. I have support with my English too. I will start Level 2 in September. I have a CSW in college and go to Deaf First every week for a tutorial with a teacher. She helps me to keep up with my course work and improve my English and Maths. I plan to continue Child Care Level 3 and hope to pass my course. Then I will look for a job in a nursery or school. I do voluntary work in a nursery near my home to get more experience.
