This course is for beginners who have no knowledge of British Sign Language. It will help you understand and communicate in British Sign Language with Deaf People.
Course Details BSL Level 1 (Signature)
The qualification is divided into 3 units, each of which can be achieved separately. Candidates are required to pass all units to gain the qualification. Unit 101 Introduction to BSL Topics covered:meeting people, using numbers, weather, transport, and directions. Unit 102 Conversation to BSL Topics covered: at home - people, animals and objects, using numbers, interests and activities, and weather. Unit 103 Communicate in BSL about everyday life. Topics covered: getting around, exchanging information, refreshments, and using numbers.
Course Details BSL Level 1 (iBSL)
The qualification consists of three units, all of which are mandatory:
• Understand basic information in British Sign Language
• Take part in and follow simple conversations in British Sign Language
• Develop strategies to acquire simple and basic British Sign Language skills
The qualification is divided into three units as follows All three units can be achieved separately, but the full Level 1 Award in British Sign Language can only be given if there is a PASS in each unit. The qualification is divided into 3 units, each of which can be achieved separately. Candidates are required to pass all units to gain the qualification. Unit IBSL1A1: Receptive Skills in BSL, Unit IBSL1A2: Descriptive Skills in BSL. IBSL1A3: Conversational Skills in BSL.
Topics and contents:
Meeting people (identifying common courtesies and information, understanding simple question forms, and the fingerspelling names & places)
Work, school and/or college (identifying types of work or educational institutions, occupations or courses being learnt, length of time worked or number of years in school/college, e.g. final year)
Using numbers (use of local numbering systems for counting people, things, telling the time, age and currency variants)
Weather (identifying comments about the weather and seasonal variants)
Instructions and Directions (being able to understand instructions and directions of what to do/where to go/how to do something)
Opinions and Ideas (understanding the difference between facts and ideas/opinions in simple descriptions or statements)
Use of simple linking conventions and prepositions (i.e. use of sign structures linking words and phrases)
Signing Structure (understanding placement, use of verbs & phrases, non-manual features, sign order, handshapes, direction, orientation)
BSL Level 1 starts in January 2018. The course will be taught on Monday evenings 6.30pm – 8.30pm.

The sessions are two hours, and course will be for 23 weeks.
Cost of Course:
BSL Level 1 - 23 week course - 2 hours per session - Course fee £331 + £90 (assessment and examination fee) The total cost of the course: £421. Payments can be made using credit or debit card.
The course fee can be paid in full or installment plan to be paid within four consecutive monthly installments as illustrated below:

If we do not receive your first payment before the course begins you will not be able to take your place. Course Fees are outlined on the Fee Schedule. Refunds will be made in the following circumstances – Course cancelation, withdrawal prior to commencement of course.
